| Ian Fincham, B.Sc. Patent Agent Partner Ian Fincham is one of the founding members of the firm. Ian is a graduate of McGill University in Montreal, Quebec and holds a B.Sc. degree in chemistry. He is registered as a patent agent in Canada and is also registered to practise before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Ian started practising with the patent agency firm of Alan Swabey & Co. in Montreal immediately after graduating from McGill University. He joined with Ronald McFadden in 1969 to form the firm of McFadden, Fincham. Ian has devoted his career to the practice of intellectual property and has a strong professional relationship with colleagues throughout the world, both in corporate and private practice. During his career, he has delivered talks to United States corporate clients on Canadian patent practice. In 1985, Ian joined with the then Commissioner of Patents, André Gariepy, and Joseph Day, now Senator Day, on a speaking tour in Japan where talks, question and answer periods and discussions about major amendments to the Canadian Patent Act were given to a number of Japanese intellectual property associations. Together with other members of the firm, Ian has been instrumental in obtaining favourable pioneering decisions before the Patent Appeal Board of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, such as Monsanto v. Commissioner of Patents relating to expert evidence and predictability which was confirmed by the Supreme Court of Canada. Ian has acted in the capacity of patent advisor to multi-national corporations with respect to patent litigation in Canada, Japan, United Kingdom, Europe and other countries. | |||||
